Sound form
Sound form is a project that creates musical images through graphic design techniques. These musical images aim to evoke sound through vision—allowing the viewer to hear what they see.
Echo
The second issue Echo, focuses on the phenomenon of sound released into space, reflected, and returned with a time delay.
To explore this phenomenon visually, the book begins with a set of simple rules for translating sound into visual form. For Echo, elements such as repetition, delay, speed, volume, and pitch are transformed into geometric shapes. From these rules, thousands of images were generated, from which 60 were selected and refined to form the final sequence.
Rather than controlling every outcome, the process allows chance and unexpected associations to become part of the work. The resulting images evoke a range of sensations—electronic, organic, meditative, and even demonic—while their sequence gradually suggests a sense of time, reflecting the way sound travels, reflects, and returns.
Production
The cover is made from heavyweight, semi-transparent tracing paper printed in Yves Klein blue. The inside pages are printed with a three-color risograph on high-quality, textured paper. The book explores overprinting through the layering of three different dot sizes to create beautiful gradients. Variations in ink texture, slight misregistration, smudging, and bleed make each copy unique.
Printed and bound by hand in our studio.
