Sound form

Sound Form is a project that creates musical images through graphic design techniques. These musical images aim to evoke sound through vision—allowing the viewer to hear what they see.

Test Pressing

Test Pressing began as an experiment—a first attempt to see what might happen when sound was translated into visual form. Rather than starting with a fixed concept, the process began with making images and gradually discovering where they could lead.

A set of rules was established to translate sound into imagery: shape represents tone, repetition indicates rhythm, size corresponds to volume, and color defines pitch. Thousands of images were then generated through these rules and freely combined, exploring what kind of visual and auditory experiences might emerge from the process.

This edition is raw, intense, and chaotic, yet also captures fleeting moments of harmony and silence. It draws the reader into a dense rush of images and print, capturing the exhilaration of sound.

Production

The cover is made from heavyweight semi-transparent tracing paper printed with black and silver ink. The inside pages are printed with four-color risograph on textured paper. The book explores the limits of risograph printing through generous use of solid color areas and overprinting. Subtle variations in ink texture slight misregistration smudging and bleed make each copy unique.
